The “AI Goes Galactic” scenario will be hard to accomplish given that radiation (especially cosmic rays) frequently damages electronic equipment in space (including low earth orbit). Add to the fact that today’s chips have incredibly small transistors, anyone putting up orbital data centers will need to be adept at doing workarounds that will be much more difficult than the ones NASA (and other space agencies) do to repair the much older and larger transistor chips currently in space.
